Why Firmness Matters

Firmness is subjective, but body weight is the single biggest factor in how a mattress feels. A medium-firm mattress that feels perfect for a 70 kg person might feel rock-hard to a 50 kg person and too soft to a 100 kg person. Understanding this relationship helps you choose a mattress that actually supports your body.

The Firmness Scale Explained

Mattress firmness is typically rated on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is extremely soft and 10 is extremely firm. Most mattresses fall between 3 (soft) and 8 (firm). Here is a general breakdown:

Soft (3-4): Deep contouring, allows body to sink in significantly. Medium (5-6): Balanced support and comfort. Medium-Firm (6-7): Most popular range, suits most sleepers. Firm (7-8): Minimal sinking, strong surface support.

Lightweight Sleepers (Under 60 kg)

Lighter individuals do not exert enough pressure to compress firmer mattresses properly. This means a firm mattress may not contour to their curves at all, leaving gaps under the lower back and poor spinal alignment. Soft to medium mattresses (3-5 on the firmness scale) work best.

Look for: Soft memory foam, plush pillow tops, or soft latex mattresses that can conform to your lighter body weight without requiring significant pressure to activate.

Average Weight Sleepers (60-90 kg)

This is the most common weight range, and fortunately the widest variety of mattresses will work. Medium to medium-firm mattresses (5-7) typically provide the best balance of comfort and support. Your body weight is enough to activate the comfort layers while the support system maintains proper spinal alignment.

Look for: Pocket spring mattresses with 1000+ springs, medium memory foam, or hybrid mattresses that combine both technologies.

Heavier Sleepers (Over 90 kg)

Heavier individuals need firmer support to prevent excessive sinking, which can lead to poor spinal alignment and mattress degradation. A medium-firm to firm mattress (6-8) with robust support systems is essential.

Look for: High-density foam bases, reinforced pocket springs with thicker gauge wire, or hybrid mattresses with strong coil systems. Edge support is particularly important for heavier sleepers.

Testing in Person

No chart can replace personal experience. Visit our showroom and spend at least 15 minutes lying on each mattress in your preferred sleep position. Pay attention to whether your spine stays aligned and whether you feel any pressure points.
